Member testimonies: How Toastmasters has helped us

Luann:

Author,
retired member

I was a painfully shy kid, preferring to eat my paper lunches at school alone than risk being rejected by others. As an adult, due to a desire to have a career and friends, I forced myself to move just out isolation, but still preferred others to approach me first. Frankly, it was a huge struggle just to make friends, even though in my heart of hearts, I knew that I could be a very good friend to someone and was yearning to have people in my life that saw more me for more than a person with little self confidence.

A successful college career helped, followed by the career that came completing my education. But no one knew how hard it was – the discomfort at starting a conversation, interviewing for a job or engaging in team work. And to talk in front of a group of people? Unthinkable!
A boss who had become a mentor and friend suggested Toastmasters – a group in which she belonged. I was intrigued. But, here’s the clincher. By then, I’d been in a serious car accident that caused a speech impediment and memory problems. So now I not only had my innate shyness but some cognitive challenges as well.
With this friend’s support, I attended. I’ve now been a member since 1990. I cannot even begin to express the degree this organization has changed my life! On top of working on my memory by remembering speeches, I became beyond comfortable speaking in front of others - whether it is one on one or in a group – I discovered I loved it!
My very best friends in the world were made through Toastmasters. I have been in the offices of President, Educational Vice President, Sergeant at Arms and several other positions, all of which have taught me leadership skills.
As corny as this sounds, sometimes I feel like the actress that gushed, “They like me! They honestly like me!” at receiving an Academy Award, when hearing warm, supportive applause or when winning an award.
I’ve competed as far up as in two District conferences – what a rush that was!
Excitement, growth, friendships, increased self-esteem; skills that will help you in whatever work you do…it can all stem from a willing heart, a few bucks and the willingness to be scared – and the opportunity of getting past the fear to fantastic.
So whether you just want a tantalizing outside your home, once a week, to learn from people from all walks of life or you want to grow, grow and grow some more – Gilbert Toastmasters is definitely the place for you! Guests are always not only welcomed but cherished. Plunge in, the waters fine.
